Mood Sewing Network: Promenade au Pavot Voile
Did you know Mood has several (17, by my count today) exclusive collections available on multiple substrates?
Yeah. ME NEITHER.
That’s why I opted to work with some for my third month in the Mood Sewing Network. I picked out a vibrant floral panel/border design on voile from the Jacques Collection.
The voile is 55” wide with the floral motif repeating every 23.25” (= 1 panel). At $8.99 per panel, I ordered 6 panels with my $50 credit. The fabric and print quality are excellent. As expected, the voile is slightly sheer when held up to light. An ideal summer substrate.
As with my other Mood Sewing Network projects (knits, linen), I wasn’t entirely sure what I would make until my fabric arrived. Enter Marcel, a tank, mini and midi dress pattern by Chalk + Notch.
It’s fabulous, if I don’t say so myself (I tested this pattern and have made a handful of other versions*), but the pattern placement just didn’t have the effect I was envisioning. I stubbornly saw the dress all the way through while ignoring that little cricket chirping, “uhhhh. I’m not sure this is what you wanted.”
And now I have three pieces to show off. I reworked the dress into a top, shorts, and a skirt.
As I mentioned before, the Marcel pattern features a tank version, but my top here is an adlib. Having cut the dress apart right between the 2nd and 3rd tiers, I improvised a new version. The bottom 3 and a half inches became a casing for 3 inch wide elastic.
I did my best to create a backyard oasis for lounging since I have neither a yacht nor a pool.
Pro tip! If a global pandemic has disrupted the supply of elastic, you can always join multiple widths to create an elastic of your desired width and you don’t even have to leave your home. #introvertsgonnastayhomeregardless
The skirt is very basic. Simply the bottom 3 tiers of both side panels joined at the side seams with a simple waistband added for elastic.
So things didn’t exactly go as planned. That’s 2020 for you. But my seam ripper and I came away with three new mix and match wardrobe items, a pitcher of blackberry bramble, and some cute pictures of my dog.
Thanks for having me, Mood! I’d love to participate in the Mood Sewing Network again in the winter.
