Hi.

Welcome to my site. Sometimes I blog about my sewing.

Pattern Testing: SSD Meadowood

Hi, Reader!

Do you like piña coladas….and sewing up new patterns? (Not even sorry.)

I joined in the testing process for Straight Stitch Designs’ latest pattern, the Meadowood. It was my first time testing for Kimberly.

This blouse pattern covers a wide range of body sizes (up to a full bust and hips of 60”) with 2 cup sizes. The style is “oversized,” meaning there’s a fair amount of design ease as well. (See another designer’s, Adrianna of Hey June Handmade’s, post about design and wearing ease for a great discussion on ease as it relates to clothing style.)

My sample is size 6B.

My sample is size 6B.

Meadowood features a V neck, elbow-length dolman sleeves, gentle gathering at the front and back yokes, and buttons up the front .

Your fabric choice will be important. I picked a very drapey mystery woven from my deep stash. It's quite possible it's silk! (I performed a burn test. The fabric curled away into ashy bits which crushed easily, without melting, and smelled kind of earthy (as opposed to plastic-y/unnatural/chemical-y).)

The most challenging part of the construction is binding the neckline which extends into the button placket. I'll admit I didn't fully understand this during testing, so my binding is much more narrow than intended. Kimberly added more content to clarify this part and ensure every sewist will be successful here.

I'll also admit I didn't attempt to put buttonholes in this POSSIBLY SILK fabric as I knew I wouldn't need to unbutton any buttons for dressing.

Kimberly drafts for a stature of 5’9” and while I miss that mark by 4”, I did not make any major length changes. I did take an extra ⅜” out at the shoulder seams to ensure the gathering line would be appropriately positioned above my apex.

Ultimately, I like this unique pattern. I cannot think of a similar one, can you? And the Meadowood is a relatively quick sew, especially if you opt out of the buttonholes.

Before Covid (BC), I would have worn this top with some skinny jeans for date night. I also think the Meadowood works well styled with flares as Amy shared.

For now though, I’m hanging out with my greenhouse plants.
